Nowhere is it more critical to get a good night sleep than in the hospital. Absent a proper sleep pattern, the body is unable to recover from the traumas of illness or surgery.
Paleolife Massage Therapy is partnering with hospitals in the G.T.A. to raise money to provide overnight patients with complimentary sleep masks and ear plugs.
By covering the eyes, sleep masks help enable overnight hospital patients prevent unwanted blue light from keeping them awake when they need to sleep the most. Blue light after dark has been shown to disturb the normal functioning of the pineal gland, and suppress the release of melatonin, making it difficult to fall asleep.
Ear plugs help dampen the sound of essential medical equipment overnight, as well as the sound of other patients who happen to be sharing a room in the hospital. Sleep sound levels above 40 dB (decibels) can lead to sleep disturbance and insomnia.
